Have You Got A Missing Faberge Item?

March 29th 2008 23:01
A woman on the Antiques Roadshow TV programme presented a beautiful diamond brooch for valuing. An Edwardian family heirloom, it was bought in France. She was delighted when it was a Faberge piece and worth a fortune!

There are many missing Faberge items - jewellery, clocks, cigarrette cases. These are usually small but, surprisingly, some of the famous eggs became lost in the Revolution!

These gorgeous eggs include:

The Danish Silver Jubilee Egg

Tsar Alexander III gave this as a present to his wife, Marie Feodorovna, on the day of the Danish Silver Jubilee. White and blue, this large egg features a Danish elephant and heraldic lion, and opens to reveal two portraits - of King Christian and Queen Louise.

The Rosebud Egg

This small egg of gold, strawberry and white includes Cupid's arrows set with rose diamonds and opens to real a crown of rubies and diamonds. The crown opens to reveal a miniature ruby egg!

The Swan Egg

This was a present to the Tsarina Alexandra from Nicholas II in 1906. It's best feature is the swan on a lake of aquamarine with water lilies.

Egg with Love Trophies

This has a picture frame of precious gems shaped like a heart with a portrait of Nicholas II.

Two eggs have been found in recent years - the Constellation Egg and the Karelian Birch Egg .Sadly the invoice for the last egg was made out to "Mr.Romanov" instead of the "Czar of All the Russias" because Nicholas II had abdicated.

I wonder how many of these will turn up over the years and how many are lost forever. It's amazing how much stuff seems to still be found. Not just jewelery but paintings as well..

You never know what you'll find at auctions and garage sales! A friend of mine bought an etching by a famous artist at an auction sale. He lived in Washington, however. It's harder here!
